BETTER BAMBOO BUILDINGS

a platform for bamboo design information & insights

Initiated in August 2020, by Ewe Jin Low, an architect who after many years of conventional practice has refocused and committed his work towards bamboo design, building and education.

Book Launch - BAMBOO ARK 1

'Bamboo Ark 1: Exemplary Bamboo Buildings' is Ewe Jin Low’s first book and it features a collection of 30 contemporary bamboo buildings in various countries from South America to South-East Asia. Bamboo Ark was written during the harsh Melbourne pandemic lockdowns of 2020 - most of the writing and coordination the book was done within 12 months of the lockdown with the book project contributors and team coordination done virtually. It was published in June 2022 and formally launched at the Godown, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 21 August 2022.

Each bamboo building tells a story, and that is the common thread for most bamboo projects as they are still very much bespoke and fascinating in their design process, procurement and construction. The buildings in the book apply both traditional methods of construction as well as new and innovative techniques and these are highlighted and explained in the book.

Excerpt from The Star Newspaper, Lifestyle Section, 23 July 2022 -

Low added that “a successful bamboo building is all about how it comes together as a process right from bamboo cultivation, sensitive harvesting, preserving and treating it adequately, to designing with care, and building it with a team or the backing of a community”.

“Bamboo has re-emerged as a contending building material in a world where we are faced head-on with climate change and environmental issues. This collection of buildings and the stories they convey will serve to inform, invoke and motivate those who are embarking or are already on the bamboo path,” said Low, in the introduction to the book.

This book is a cross between a high photo content coffee table book with that of a technical reference book on bamboo buildings. Photographs, drawings, construction details and illustrations were carefully selected for each featured project. The special features of this book include:

  • write ups and commentary on the how’s and why’s for each project

  • close up and construction photos of bamboo details

  • drawings and sketches

  • 3D analysis diagrams of each building

  • a special feature section on the importance Bamboo Model Making in the design process.

This bamboo book will become a useful addition to many design, technical and reference library and bookshelves.

From the Publisher, Atelier International.

Bamboo Ark brings together a collection of contemporary bamboo buildings from across the world. These buildings have been selected to showcase their particular design based on location, built form and structure. Bamboo is a re-emerging material and there are limited design and technical books for bamboo when we compare it to other established materials such as timber, steel and concrete.

Delivered from the perspective of an architect who has immersed, designed, built and lived in bamboo buildings, this book provides a how-to reference on bamboo architecture to further promote the use of bamboo in design and construction.
